Get to know Tim Beaudoin
Tim Beaudoin is running for Councilor at Large in Worcester, New England's 2nd largest city
My main priority on the Worcester City Council will be to address our immediate social and economic problems while preparing our community to prosper in the face of the major changes occurring in the world’s economy. Our most pressing present concern is the lack of a strong local economy and the resultant lack of jobs for Worcester residents. I will work to provide tax breaks for locally-owned businesses and cooperatives, for new start-ups, and for businesses associated with green technology research and manufacturing. These initiatives will help build a robust and sustainable local economy that keeps jobs and money in the community while placing Worcester at the cutting edge of eco-friendly economic change.
As an educator, I am concerned to see that our public schools are provided the resources they need to serve our kids properly. In particular, I will work with the School Committee and the Public Schools Department to implement educational programs in two specific areas: civic engagement and ecological awareness. With voter turn-out and civic participation at all-time lows – especially in local elections and among younger voters – Worcester should be teaching its students the nuanced structure and functions of our city’s “Modified Plan E” government, alternative city government plans, and the dynamics of our Commonwealth’s government. Students also need to be introduced to conservation issues, to the climate change debate, and to alternative energy and renewable resource developments.
As a fourth generation Worcester resident, I am deeply connected to Worcester’s rich past. And as one who grew up here during the end of the 20th century, I am proud of being part of the beautifully diverse community that has evolved here in recent years. As a dedicated teacher of young people, I have a committed concern for the future of our city and its up and coming generations. At the same time, I act out of deep respect for the senior citizens who helped carry our nation and our city through the perils of the 20th century – many of whom are now particularly affected by recent economic stresses. I will advocate for real estate tax breaks for retired seniors in our community, for ready access to needed healthcare, and for more adequate public transportation for residents and students who need alternatives to the automobile.
In order to help our dedicated city employees better serve our current and evolving community, I will work to establish regular diversity and team-building workshops involving Worcester residents who represent the various sub-communities that are valued and valuable components of our city’s broad cultural heritage. With concern for the future generations, I will work to see that council appropriations of city funds for infrastructural renovations and equipment purchases will be made with an eye for sustainability, energy efficiency, and a cleaner environment so that we can save money, help decrease our nation’s dependence on unstable energy markets, have a more attractive city, and be an exemplar for other communities in the Commonwealth and our nation at large.
As a fresh, homegrown candidate I vow that my every effort as a new city councilor will be to work with the people of our city to address our city’s present and future needs without personal bias or ulterior motives. Worcester is special place that deserves to be tended to and invested in by all of us, and I look forward to working with and for you to secure a better and brighter future in Worcester for years to come. Thank you.
