Stein Launches Campaign for President
Offers real alternative to the "Wall Street parties"
On October 24, Jill Stein launched her campaign for President of the United States with a call for a Green New Deal that would end unemployment in America, provide health care as a human right, end our wars abroad, and transition the nation to a renewable energy economy. Stein issued a stinging rebuke to “two Wall Steet-first” parties that have given the nation “massive bailouts for Wall Street, layoffs on Main Street, declining wages for workers, wars for oil abroad, and attacks on Medicare and Social Security.” She further noted that “They’re privatizing education, rolling back civil liberties and racial justice, plundering the environment, and driving us towards the calamity of climate change.”
According to Stein “we need people in Washington who refuse to be bought by lobbyist money and for whom change is not just a slogan.”
Stein also advocated ending the student debt crisis by forgiving outstanding loans and providing tuition-free education from kindergarten through college. She would also impose a nationwide moratorium on home foreclosures and require banks and lending institutions to reduce mortgage debt to a value reflective of current market value of properties.
Stein was introduced by Ben Manski, a former Green Party co-chair who is now leading the Liberty Tree Foundation.
Manski explained that “Jill Stein is nationally known within the Green Party. I hail from Wisconsin, and people in Wisconsin are very excited about this campaign. People across the mid-west, in California, in Hawaii, all across this country know and respect Jill Stein . . . , they’ve followed what she’s done over the past eleven years here in Massachusetts, and she is unquestionably going to win this nomination and be our standard bearer next year.”
