For Peace on Memorial Day

Berkshire Greens participate in Peace Vigil

by Scott Laugenour

Since 2002 peace vigils organized by the Berkshire Citizens for Peace and Justice have taken place every Thursday evening in downtown Pittsfield.  Members of the Berkshire Greens, the local chapter of the Green-Rainbow Party in the Berkshires, have always participated in these important events.   On Thursday, May 26, 2011, Green-Rainbow Party members Jeff Turner (Pittsfield) and Jeff Wheeler (Stockbridge), pictured below,  took part in the pre-Memorial Day vigil along with myself, fellow members Gordon Dunham and Tim Wright, and other activists.

We welcomed Wendy and Tom as new members of the Green-Rainbow Party.  We also referred New York State residents who travel across the border to Pittsfield to register back home with the Green Party of New York.  Many peace activists are realizing that their advocacy for peace is bolstered by publicly affiliating with the only party that unequivocably stands for peace.

The peace advocates assembled were happy to learn of the Green-Rainbow Party's recent initiatives summit, which formalized the party's commitment to peace.  Jeff Wheeler is on the statewide Peace Initiative workgroup within the Green-Rainbow Party.  All of us in the Berkshire Greens look forward to more such outreach.

Please contact berkshires@green-rainbow.org for more information about the Berkshires local.

Weekly peace vigils take place at Park Square Pittsfield, between 5pm and 6pm.  Signs are provided, or bring your own.
