J.D. Hebert, director of housing and shelter at the Berkshire Community Action Council, will speak about the plight of people at the bottom of the county’s economic ladder and how his agency works with them.

Nick Stanton, an organizer of Transition Town Great Barrington, will speak on prospects for optimal living in that town in the decades after worldwide oil production has peaked, and about TTGB’s work.

Gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein of Lexington will be keynote speaker at the biennial event, to which people of all political stripes are invited. It will include an Indian buffet lunch, live music, and child care.

Admission is free, but donations will be encouraged to cover food and other costs. Those planning to attend are requested to RSVP at
berkshire.grp.rsvp@gmail.com and 413-728-5157 by 6 p.m., Friday, June 18.

Stein, a physician who co-founded the Massachusetts Coalition for Healthy Communities, has based her campaign on being the only “outsider” grassroots candidate who is independent of corporate-sponsored political machines. She has served on the boards of Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility and Citizens for Voter Choice.

Two Green-Rainbow Party candidates for the state House of Representatives from Berkshire County will also speak: Scott Laugenour of Lenox in the 4th Berkshire District, and Mark Miller of Pittsfield in the 3rd Berkshire District. Laugenour is a former regional vice president of Marriott Hotels and an arts entrepreneur. Miller is a former editor of The Berkshire Eagle and a former co-owner of Eagle Publishing Co.

The Green-Rainbow Party was formed in 2003 when the Rainbow Coalition Party joined with the Massachusetts Green Party. It is an affiliate of the Green Party of the United States, a federation of Green parties committed to environmentalism, non-violence, social justice, and grassroots organizing.
